The Arctic Biome is one of four biomes in Project Rebearth. It covers the frozen polar regions of the world, representing the harshest environment for settlement. The Arctic biome has no natural resource extraction so the Woodcutter, Quarry, Claypit, Iron Mine, or Foraging Hut buildings can't be built. Settlements must rely entirely on the Fishery for food and on trade for all other resources, making it the most challenging biome to develop.

Overview

[edit]

The Arctic biome is associated with frozen tundra and polar landscapes. Unlike other biomes, the Arctic has no primary resource to harvest locally. The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood is used as the construction material, the same as the Wood Biome, but at significantly higher costs.

Construction

[edit]

Buildings in the Arctic biome cost The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood as their primary resource, at double the rate of the Wood Biome. A Shack costs 70 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood compared to 35 in the Wood biome, and a Cabin costs 160 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood compared to 80. The Town Hall costs 1,500 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood plus 500 The Stone resource icon on Project Rebearth Stone, 10 The Tools resource icon on Project Rebearth Tools, and 20 The Glass resource icon on Project Rebearth Glass. The The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood cost is 1.5× the Wood biome rather than the usual 2×.

Housing Upkeep

[edit]

The Arctic biome has the highest housing upkeep of any biome, with The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood consumption at double the standard rate. A Shack consumes -2 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood per day, compared to -1 in the Wood Biome and Stone Biome, or -0.1 in the Earth Biome. The Food resource icon on Project Rebearth Food consumption remains the same across all biomes.

Resource Production

[edit]

The Arctic biome has no resource extraction buildings. The Woodcutter, Quarry, Claypit, Iron Mine, and Foraging Hut cannot be built. This means there is no local production of The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood, The Stone resource icon on Project Rebearth Stone, The Earth resource icon on Project Rebearth Earth, or The Ore resource icon on Project Rebearth Ore.

The Fishery is the only source of local food production, generating 5 The Food resource icon on Project Rebearth Food per day. Boats can be placed near the Fishery or Pier to add 3 The Food resource icon on Project Rebearth Food per day each. The Fishery requires a coastal placement and 100 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood to build.

Processing buildings such as the Windmill, Bakery, Brewery, Tailor, Creamery, Refinery, and Tools Workshop are available and operate at the same rates as in other biomes. However, all raw materials for these buildings (The Grain resource icon on Project Rebearth Grain, The Milk resource icon on Project Rebearth Milk, The Wool resource icon on Project Rebearth Wool, The Ore resource icon on Project Rebearth Ore) must be imported through trade.

Strategy

[edit]

The Arctic biome is the most challenging biome in the game due to its complete lack of resource extraction. Every The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood, The Stone resource icon on Project Rebearth Stone, The Earth resource icon on Project Rebearth Earth, and The Ore resource icon on Project Rebearth Ore must be obtained through trade, making the Port and Market essential buildings. The Port should be an early priority to enable large-scale imports.

The Fishery and Boats are the sole local food source. Coastal placement is critical, settlements should be founded near coastlines to maximize Fishery and Boat placement opportunities. A single Fishery produces 5 The Food resource icon on Project Rebearth Food per day, and each Boat adds 3 The Food resource icon on Project Rebearth Food per day, requiring careful scaling to support population growth.

The double The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood construction cost and double The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood upkeep create enormous demand for imported The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood. A Villa costs 560 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood and consumes -7 The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood per day, compared to 280 and -3.5 in the Wood Biome. Managing The Wood resource icon on Project Rebearth Wood supply through trade is the central challenge of Arctic biome gameplay.

Processing buildings can add value to imported raw materials. For example, importing The Ore resource icon on Project Rebearth Ore and processing it through the Refinery and Tools Workshop into The Tools resource icon on Project Rebearth Tools allows Arctic settlements to export finished goods at a premium, partially offsetting the high cost of resource imports.
